Portobello America HQ

Originally founded in 1979, in the city of Tijucas, Portobello is one of the leading ceramic tile manufacturers in Brazil.

In 2017 Portobello came to DIA with a vision of launching Portobello America. Due to their established clientele expanding, tailor-made needs, for the US Market, began to emerge. Portobello requested DIA design the headquarters of Portobello America, in Baxter, Tennessee.  Set to be built in phases, the majority of this 890,000 sf industrial facility was dedicated to manufacturing and warehouse space.  Our main challenge was to combat the rigid nature of tile manufacturing by developing a flexible design, suitable for versatility and expansion.  The solution was to intentionally engineer certain areas, throughout the plant, to efficiently transform from warehouse storage to equipment zoning. With products, processes, and technology changing rapidly, it was crucial for Portobello to operate in a space with as little restrictions as possible.

DIA focused on emphasizing their architectural and interior design skills within the showroom and office areas.  At this location, the façade consists of single-skin, corrugated and smooth metal panels with butt-glazed storefront, offering a high level of transparency and natural light.  Used as a main entry point for visitors, the double-height showroom showcases Portobello’s porcelain tile products.  Within the showroom, potential clients have direct view and access into a research and development lab.  Adjacent to the showroom are corporate offices, meeting rooms, and a private break room.  Overlooking the showroom below, the mezzanine level occupies additional space for office expansion, training, mixed-use areas, and a larger break room, for warehouse and manufacturing employees.
