The Commons at Knoxville
The Commons at Knoxville is a 211-unit apartment complex comprising eleven three-story buildings on five individual tracts in the historic Fort Sanders neighborhood. The buildings’ street presence is diminished in scale through the use of an articulated plan that creates the image of multiple structures. These multiple structures vary in their in their design combinations so as to diminish the massing effect and enhance congruence with the neighborhood’s historic Victorian structures. The buildings’ exterior materials and elements also reflect those traditionally found in the area.
The surrounding neighborhoods and the City of Knoxville were involved from the beginning to insure a cohesive design. The design process was streamlined by a condensed schedule. In 2011, the new owners of The Commons commissioned Design Innovation Architects (DIA) to renovate the office and amenities spaces to meet their management needs, providing a modified use plans and all-new finishes.
