Mast General Store

Mast General Store opened its downtown Knoxville operation in 2006, in the historic structure at 402 South Gay Street. Once Design Innovation Architects (DIA) and Holrob/InSite Development had completed shell renovations of the entire structure, Mast teamed up with DIA to complete the 30,000-square-foot buildout of the first floor and two basement levels.

With Holrob/InSite, DIA prepared the building for the future occupants by clearing the entire building of non-historic interior elements including contaminants; designing and installing a new, historically appropriate storefront and cornice; and upgrading the infrastructure with new electrical and mechanical systems.

After Mast’s renovations, DIA teamed up with Gay Street Development Partners to build out the upper three floors into business offices and residential condominiums, thus providing a true large-scale mixed-use facility in downtown Knoxville totaling over 67,000 square feet of space.
